  • Sharpeville Massacre

    Became known signalled the start of armed resistance in South Africa, and promoted worldwide condemnation of South Africa's apartheid policies. 69 people dead and 180 had bullet wounds, Police later claimed they were in extreme danger
  • Albert Luthuli wins the Nobel Peace Prize

    For his fight against racial discrimination through non-violent means. He was the first African to win the prize
  • Spear of the Nation formed

    Was the active military wing of the African National Congress in cooperation with the South African Communist Party in their fight against the South African apartheid government
  • Nelson Mendela sentenced to life in prison

    He was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other changes, sentenced to life in prison
  • The Soweto Uprising

    Students from numerous Sowetan Schools began to protest in the street of Soweto, in response to the introduction of Africas as the medium of introduction in local schools
  • Steve Biko dies in police custody

    South Africa authorities claimed that Mr. Bio's hunger strike cause his death, instead it was of a brain hemorrhage being struck multiple times in the head
  • Desmond Tutu wins the Nobel Peace Prize

    Won the Nobel Peace Prize for his role as a unifying leader figure in the campaign to resolve the problem of apartheid in South Africa
  • Nelson Mandela released from prison

    He was released because Martin Luther king said his speech, as you might already know, he was put in prison for trying to get the black and white people to have equal rights
