  • Apartheid put into action by national party

    This event marked the beginning of legalized racism's harshest acts called apartheid.
  • Mixed Marriages act

    The mixed marriages act was a law passed that prohibited "whites" marrying "Non whites". the act was designed to "Protect" white political and social dominance by preventing the line being blurred between the white society and everyone else in south africa
  • Population registration act

    The population registration act was a law that required each and every person in South Africa was classified and registered by their race, in accordance with the apartheid system.
  • Sharpeville massacre

    The sharpeville massacre occurred when a crowd of around 7000 black protesters was standing outside of a police station, and the police open fired on the crowd. 69 people were killed and 180 injured, 29 of the victims being children. Many were shot in the back as they fled.
  • Rivonia Trial

    The Rivonia trial took place during apartheid in South Africa, because of a group of activists protesting apartheid were arrested at Liliesleaf Farm in Rivonia. They had been using the farm as a meeting place for "uMkhonto we Sizwe" or the African national congress. this trial ended with the arrest of Nelson Mandela and many others
  • Assassination of Hendrik verwoerd

    Verwoerd was assassinated in Cape town after entering the house of assembly. He was stabbed to death by a temporary parliamentary messenger.
  • Bantu homeland citizenship act

    The Bantu homeland citizenship act ruled that all black people would assume the nationality of one of the homelands, even if they've never even been there. The purpose of this would be to ensure that later down the road, there would be no black south africans
  • Township uprising

    Also known as the township revolt, the Township uprising was driven by personal grievances and opposition to apartheid, this uprising lasted 2 years and affected most all of the region.
  • Nelson mandella released from prison

    After spending 27 years in prison, Nelson walks out of Victor Verster Prison holding his wife, Winnie's hand. There were hundreds of people who had stood outside for hours in the extreme heat just to catch a glimpse of him, as even while he was imprisoned, his fame as an anti-apartheid activist only grew, and he became a symbol for the South african congress.
  • Nelson Mandela becomes president

    4 years after being released from prison, Nelson was inaugurated as president of south africa. His presidency lasted till 1999
