To easily settle land to the west of the United States,the goverment implemented a simple plan to settle the populatiopon west. file an application, improve the land, and file for deed of title. -
1862 Morill Land Grant Act
Allowed for the creation of land-grant colleges.It was led by Professor Jonathan Baldwin Turner of Illinois College to allow a bill to fund a system of Industrial colleges for each state.It was signed into law by Abraham Lincoln in 1862 on July 2. -
The election of 1868
Republicans nominated Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. a civil war hero with a strong reputation ,he used his reputation to earn his canidancy for president.Democrats nominated Horatio Seymour.Although the popular vote was close between the two,Seymour lost to Grant in the electoral vote. -
1869-Black Friday
"Jubilee"Jim Fisk and partner Jay Gould attempt to corner the gold market on the New York Gold exchange.Fisk first recruited Grant’s brother-in-law, Abel Corbin. They used Corbin to convince Grant to appoint General Daniel Butterfield as assistant Treasurer of the United States. He would control the sale of gold by the goverment.Gould continued to purchase large amounts of gold.This caused the price of gold to rise and stocks to crash. -
1872 Revolt by Liberal Republicans
Reformers start the Liberal Republican party in response to the political corruption in Washington.The Liberal Republican Party met in Cincinnati and chose Horace Greeley as their presidential candidate for the election of 1872,however,the democratic party also supported Greely. The Liberal Republicans then turned to Grant. -
The Panic of 1873
Started by Over-spending with borrowed money and caused by over-speculation.Businesses and banks went bankrupt. -
