  • Use of Hobart

    Whalers and Sealaers used Hobart as a base to sail in and out of Antarctica with whale oil, seal skins and other cargo
  • Shackleton arrives in Antarctica

    Shackleton came to Australia in 1907 with Australian John King Davis and Douglas Mawson who were both geologists
  • Mawson and his Party

    Mawson and his party were first to climb Mt. Erebus and reach the South Pole. After this he became the head Australassian Antarctic Expedition and mapped over 300km of coastline
  • Shacleton Returns

    When Shackleton returned he attempted the first crossing of Antarctica. With him was John King Davis as ship captain and Frank Hurley as photographer
  • Looking Down on Antartica

    Pilot George Wilkins explored Antartica by aircarft (he was first to evr do this)
  • New Technology

    With new technology available Mawson was able to map more coastline quicker and easier
  • Permanent Bases

    Australian opened their first permanent base in Antarctica - Maswon Base- after this more scientists came to run tests
  • Davis Station

    Davis Station is opened where it is a large ice free area called Vestfold Hills
  • Casey Station

    Casey Station is built and opened
  • Law Base

    Law Base is built and opened
  • The Long Trek

    2 Australians and 1 New Zealander reached the South Pole on foot
