The Jacksonian Administration

The Cumberland Road was the first road built by the Federal Gov't. The creation of the road started in 1815 and ended in 1850. A british actress was going down a dirt road and didn't like the rough journey. Henry Clay convinced the Gov't to invest in roads. The people that built it had to cut 66-foot wide bands and then use shovels and pick-axes to dig a 12- to 18-inch road bed, they then filled it with crushed stone.
