Ancient Astronomers

  • 276 BCE

    Eratosthenes

    Eratosthenes
Would use the Sun to measure the circumference of the Earth. Eratosthenes would be only 211 miles off. This was radical for his time because most others believed the Earth was flat. He helped pave the way for modern astronomy.

    Claudius Ptolemy

    Claudius Ptolemy
Ptolemy would be the creator of the incorrect geocentric model of the solar system. This system would be used for some 1500 years. He would also create the works of the 'Almagesti' which was a collection of his observations and works.
  • 1473

    Nicolaus Copernicus

    Nicolaus Copernicus
Would be the first to popularize the heliocentric model where the Sun is in the center of the solar system. he would also conclude that the Earth rotates on an axis.
  • 1546

    Tycho Brahe

    Tycho Brahe
Would dedicate his life to more accurately finding the planetary positions. He would also reach his goal in measuring an arch-minute. His work would be the basis for Kepler
  • 1571

    Johannes Kepler

    Johannes Kepler
Kepler would steal the ideas of his teacher, Brahe, and mold them to fit his heliocentric hypothesis. Because of Brahe's work and Kepler's intense study Kepler was able to come out with the three law's of planetary motion. This would lead to the finding of universal gravitation.
  • Sir Issac Newton

    Sir Issac Newton
Newton would create the basic laws of motion to explain why Kepler's laws were correct. These laws would show what gravity is and how it works. Newton would also develop calculus.
  • Albert Einstein

    Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein would become one of the greatest scientist ever because of his theories. Einstein proposed that the laws of physics are the same throughout the universe. he would also state that the entity of space-time could be distorted by gravity.
