Ancient Astronomers

  • Claudius Ptolemy (384 BC)
    322 BCE

    Claudius Ptolemy (384 BC)

Geocentrism: Was the first to come up with a solar system design where the Earth is in the center of orbit. This was not correct, however it had a huge influence on the studies over a thousand years after his discovery.
  • Eratosthenes (274 BC)
    194 BCE

    Eratosthenes (274 BC)

This man was the first to determine the circumference of the Earth through calculating with what research was available at the time, and now that we do have the technology and know the accurate number, his calculation was extremely accurate. This is so important because it's amazing how since the BCE era we've had an accurate calculation of the circumference of the Earth.
  • Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543)
    Feb 19, 1473

    Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543)

Nicholas Copernicus would be the first to come up with the theory of the Sun being the center of the solar system. His design wasn't completely correct, however a huge step forward in true information in discoveries.
  • Tycho Brahe (1546-1601)
    Dec 12, 1546

    Tycho Brahe (1546-1601)

Brahe was a wealthy and educated heir whose studies were considered to be the most accurate for his time. He was an extremely intelligent astronomer at the time, and he is famed for making the invention of the telescope possible with his inventions for looking into the cosmos.
  • Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)
    Dec 27, 1571

    Johannes Kepler (1571-1630)

Kepler came up with the three laws of planetary motion, which we still use in class today. When simply put, he laws include:
    - each planet's orbit is an elliptical shape with the sun as a focus
    - a line going from the sun to the planet sweeps out equal areas in equal time
    - the square of a planet's orbital period is proportional to the cube of the length of the semi-major axis of its orbit
  • Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727)

    Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727)

Was inspired by Kepler's laws to come up with the theory of gravity, which we still use as a working theory today. His theories all aligned with all working theories at the time, the tides, comets, motions of objects on Earth, etc.
  • Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

    Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

Albert Einstein was a German physicist, who is known for his biggest contribution to science, the quantum theory. This theory is about the basics of atoms and particles and is the base structure of quantum physics.
