  • Knights coast to 57-0 victory over Independence

    Led by Burnside's 286 yards and four touchdowns, the Knights buried the Mustangs from the start. New records were broken as the Knights now sit at 2-0 in non-district play, and head into their first 3A District 5 matchup next week vs. Center Point-Urbana.

    Without SR WR Hunter Zempel and SR All-State RB Wes Burnside for the entire game, the Knights faced a tall task against a tough Saber squad. The Knights came up just short in the losing effort, failing to repeat their undefeated regular season of 2010. To add to their injury-depleted team, JR QB Trev Hadachek dislocated his right shoulder.
  • Knights answer first loss with 56-27 Romp

    With the loss of Trev Hadachek to a shoulder injury in the DeWitt defeat, the Knights Wes Burnside returned to limited action after suffering a hamstring injury during the Center Point-Urbana game. He carried for two scores but re-aggravated the injury in the victory. Sophomore Jay Scheel was impressive in his first start at quarterback, replacing the aforementioned Hadachek.
  • Maquoketa handles Union with ease in 35-15 win

    The 3A District 5 leading Maquoketa Cardinals traveled to Union for the Knights homecoming. Jay Scheel made just his second start at QB after converting from WR while Burnside played at roughly 75 percent with the lingering hamstring injury. Previous QB Trev Hadachek moved to WR due to his shoulder injury, but it wasn't enough in the losing effort.

    The Knights finally started to regain their strength. Jay Scheel continued to start at QB while Burnside was nearing 90 percent healthy. Burnside carried for 211 yards, showing his return to form. Trev Hadachek, still bothered by the shoulder injury, had a solid night at the wide receiver position.     The Knights played spoiler in their 45-14 win over the Indians while also enhancing their own playoff chances. The Knights moved into the No. 2 seed in 3A D5 behind Maquoketa, locking up a playoff spot in the process.
  • Union buries Vinton in regular season finale, 51-0

    The Knights, now 7-2 overall and 5-2 in district play, were clicking on all cylinders in their drubbing of the Vinton Vikings. With the win, the Knights sealed up the No. 2 seed in 3A D5 and gained the rights to host their first round playoff game. After the win, the Knights found out they would be hosting the No. 3 seed, from 3A District 6, Washington Demons.

    Sophomore QB Jay Scheel perfected a two-minute offense to lead the Knights to a dramatic 22-15 victory over the Washington Demons. The Knights found themselves trailing 15-14 with just under 2:30 remaining but Scheel connected with WR Trev Hadachek multiple times on the last drive, highlighted by the 31-yard score to take the lead.     The Knights traveled to Solon in their second round game of the playoffs. Solon, the defending 3A champions and 2A champions in 2007, 2008, and 2009, had no answer for the Knights three-headed monster of Burnside, Hadachek, and Scheel.

    Union wins quarterfinal rematch vs. Maquoketa, 21-13
    The Knights fell behind early to the Cardinals but rallied behind the legs of Jay Scheel. An electrifying 90-yard punt return by Scheel gave Union a 7-6 lead, one they would not relinquish. Scheel added a 76-yard touchdown on a QB keeper as Union kept it's title hopes alive, upsetting Maquoketa, 21-13, after losing to them earlier during the regular season, 35-15. (Photo: Rick Chase)
  • Knights knock undefeated ADM-Adel from the ranks in semifinal shootout, 42-28

    The Knights used their big-play capability in their 42-28 victory over the No. 1 ranked ADM-Adel Tigers. Union had five scoring plays of 57 yards or more. Scheel ripped off another unbelievable 82-yard QB scamper TD and also threw two long TD passes, one to both Hadachek and tight end Brad Gallup. With the win, the Knights advanced to the championship to take on Decorah, a team they defeated 20-17 in the opening game of the regular season.

    Faced with the most important game in the history of Union football, the Knights relied on their workhorse. Burnside tallied 142 yards on 24 carries, scoring once.
