  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    This battle marks the first shots of the war. They were shot by the British, but Captain John Parker led the colonists and pushed the British soldiers out.

    One month after the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the Congress began to write the Declaration of Independence while also preparing for war.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    This was the first major battle of the war and the Americans lost. It was fought outside of Boston.
  • Failed Seizure of Quebec under Benedict Arnold

    Americans lost the battle when Benedict Arnold tried to seize Quebec in an effort to have them revolt against the British rule. However, they fought and were content with British rule.

    Thomas Paine wrote a convincing and clear argument about political and moral issues, wanting people to make a stance to fight for their rights against the British rule.
  • Adoption of the Declaration of Independence

    The Continental Congress adopted this document so the 13 American colonies could cut ties from Great Britain.
  • Battle of Trenton

    George Washington launched a surprise attack and killed many hessians before he withdrew from the battle. It was small, but pivotal in the war.

    Battle of Saratoga

    This is considered the climax and turning point of the war. Americans won and then gained allies with foreign troops like France and Spain.
  • Paoli Massacre

    One of the most famous events that happened in Pennsylvania. The British launched a surprise, over night attack on General "Mad" Anthony Wayne and his men. He left his camp exposed and the British used bayonets killing and/or capturing 277 Americans.

    Washington's Encampment at Valley Forge

    Valley Forge was picked as Washington's camp because the British were taking over Philadelphia. It was close enough to keep an eye on them, but far enough away that they wouldn't have another surprise attack.
