  • Period: to

    Seven Years War

The war between France and England that caused England to begin taxing the colonies. They justified themselves by saying that they were protecting the colonies
  • Proclamation of 1763

The colonists were not allowed to move west of the Appalachian mountains. Restricted movements which didn’t allow people to buy and sell land.
  • Sugar Act

Taxation on the import of molasses. Put into place to raise revenue and pay back the debt from the seven years war.
  • Currency Act of 1764

Parliament takes full control of colonial currency. They also preferred "hard currency" (ie gold and silver) rather than paper money (bills).
  • Stamp Act

Another taxation act that required all paper used to be bought from England. Every type of document you can think of. Further angered the colonists.
  • Declaratory Act

After Franklin managed to convince parliament to repeal both the sugar and stamp act, the declaratory act was put into place. Unfortunately, this made situations worse because it gave Parliament even more control over taxation. This caused them to further emphasize external taxation because the colonists were "only against internal taxation"
  • Townshend Acts

The purpose of the Townshend Acts was to raise revenue in the colonies to pay the salaries of governors and judges so that they would remain loyal to Great Britain, to create a more effective means of enforcing compliance with trade regulations, to punish the province of New York for failing to comply with the 1765 Quartering Act, and to establish the precedent that the British Parliament had the right to tax the colonies.
  • Boston Massacre

A revolt against the taxation and the tax collectors. System became more strict and colonists couldn’t bribe the troops anymore. British troops started to fire at the colonists.
  • Gaspee Affair

The HMS gaspee was a boat that was enforcing the navigation acts at the port. A group of men boarded the ship and torched it as an act of defiance.
  • Tea Act

This act gave the East India Company a monopoly in the colonies which controlled the importation and sale of Tea. Wasn't really put into place to raise revenue for the motherland, but to help the company prosper.
  • Boston Tea Party

The Boston Tea Party was a revolt that expressed the colonists' opposition towards the Tea Act. Citizens would board the incoming ships and throw the tea into the sea.
  • Intolerable (Coercive Acts)

The purpose of these acts was to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party and other protests. The acts consisted of the:
Boston Port Act: Closed the city's harbour until damages from tea party is repayed.
Quartering Act: Unoccupied building used to house soldiers.
    Massachusetts Government Act:
  • First Continental Congress

The First Continental Congress was a meeting between the representatives of each colony. They gathered to discuss how the colonies would proceed to show their defiance towards the taxation acts. They agreed that the colonies would boycott British goods. In the future, they will meet again for the Second Continental Congress.
