    In 1619 the House of Burgesses met for the first time. The House of Burgesses was the first legislature in the colonies. It made laws for the Jamestown colony.

    Anne Bradstreet was the first colonial poet. She wrote a book that wasn't published until after her death.
  • The Great Awakening

    The Great Awakening
    The Great Awakening in the 1730s and 1740s. It was a Christian movement that spread through the colonies. It began as a reaction to a decline of religous zeal in the colonies.
  • Freedom of the Press

    Freedom of the Press
    There was press freedom because of John Peter Zenger. Zeger was the publisher of the New York Weekly Journal. He was trialed for libel, publishing of statements that damage a person's reputation. He was found not guilty, and so press was free to write what they want.
  • French and Indian War

    In 1753, the French started building forts to cliam back land. George Washington was chosen to force the French to leave. Washington built a fort and attacked the French. The Iroquois allied with the French and when the war was over, they didn't lose anything. The French lost all their land.

    Parliament passed the Sugar Act, the act put a duty, tax, on several products. The colonists protested, but the British didn't pay much attention. The act also called for punishment on smugglers.

    The Stamp Act required colonists to buy special stamps for all products. The stamps were to be placed on most documents. Many colonists protested this greatly. They boycotted British goods and sent a petition to the king to end the Sugar & stamp acts.

    The Boston Massacre occured because of the tea act. Parliament repealed all taxes except for the tea act and some colonists started to throw snowballs at British soldiers. The soldiers shot at them and killed and wounded most of them.

    The Declaration of Independence was approved on July, 4, but signed on the second of August. People celebrate July fourth though.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    The battle of Saratoga was a truning point in the Revoluntionary war. The Americans won when the British general surrendered. That battle made people believe the Americans could win.
  • Valley Forge

    The Americans were in horrible conditions in Valley Forge. They didn't have much food and horrible clothes during winter in 1777-1778.
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Battle of Yorktown
    Charles Cornwallis' troops were weakened by a battle and went to the Yorktown peninsula in Virginia. The French, allied with the Americans, chased away the British ships, chasing away Cornwallis' sea escape. The Americans attaked them and won.

    The Treaty of Paris was signed in Paris, France. The treaty was the agreements of the British and Americans. Boundaries and rights were a few of the agreements
