Boston Latin School was founded
It provided a precollege education for the new country's future leaders. -
Latin Grammer College Prep Schools Established
Boys enrolled at the age of 7 or 8 and began to learn about the emphasizes of Latin, Greek, theology, and philosophy in order to prepare to study law or religion at schools like Harvard and Yale. -
Massachusetts Law of 1647
Required a reading and writing teacher for towns of 50 of more families and t required a Latin teacher for towns of 100 or more families. -
First African American School
Started by Elias Neau in New York. Taught Africans and Native Americans how to read as part of the church's efforts to convert students. -
Philadelphia Academy
A private secondary school that was designed and promoted by Benjamin Franklin. It replaced old Latin grammer schools and focused on the English language. -

Troy Seminary was founded by Emma Willard who was an eucator and a poet. -
Boston English Classical School

The Morrill Land-Grant Act
Sponsored by Congressman Justin S. Morrill of Vermont, provided ederal land for states either to sell or rent to raise money to establish colleges of agriculture and mechanical arts. -
Committee of Ten
Stated that high schools are for college bound and the curriculum should emphasize mental disciplines in humanities, language, and science. -
G.I. Bill of Rights
Signed by president Roosevelt, it granted millions of dollars to veterans to pay for tuition, room and board at college universities. -
Seperate but Equal Rejected
The U.S. Supreme Court rejected the "seperate but equal" doctrine thathad been used since 1850. -
National Defense Educational Act of 1958
It put a spark on the learning of science, mathematics, and modern foreign languages. Also new math and science came about with it. -
Title IX of Education Amendment Act
Stated that "no person in the U.S. shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denieded the benefitsof, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." -
