    The Pennsylvania Canal connected to the Allegheny Portage Railroad. This connection lead to the transition to the railroad.
  • The Pennsylvania Railroad

    The Pennsylvania Railroad was originated. The community of the surrounding area built the city of Altoona.
  • Harrisburg to Altoona

    The railroad was constructed from Harrisburg to Altoona.
  • Horseshoe Curve

    Horseshoe Curve

    The Horseshoe Curve opened. This is a track that eventually replaced the Allegheny Railroad. This was a quick and expensive way to transfer goods and products. It joined the East and West side of PA. Once this was complete, it completely replaced the canal.
  • Travel Time

    The time to get to Philadelphia from Pittsburgh was reduced to 15 hours, compared to three days.
  • Llyswen Station

    Llyswen Station

    The Llyswen station was built on the Ellis Baker estate.
  • Industrial Workers

    By this date, 14,000 out of the 17,000 industrial workers in the area were employed by the railroad.
  • Population Growth

    After World War II, the population was at an all time peak because of the railroad. Population was at 82,000.
  • Norfolk Southern

    The name of the railroad has changed from the Pennsylvania Railroad to Norfolk Southern.
  • Change of transportation

    After WWII, the era of railroad ended. The transportation of goods started to rely on the interstate highway system. Altoona started to shift to the interstate highway.
