    D-Day the invasion of normandy
    On June 6th, 1944, the Allied forces invaded Normandy. Bombers, parachuters, and ships set out for the beaches in northern France. More than 155000 allied troops were on the land by the end of the day and were able to attack behind german lines while others attacked from the beaches.

    Liberation of Paris
    As the Germans were losing their control of the french soil, Paris was becoming extremely hard to maintain. A few days before, there was an uprising against the German soldiers. The German general then surrendered and France was free from the German occupation that lasted four years.

    Allied Offensive in the Saar Valley

    U.S. General Patton attacked the West Wall which was a line of defense between France and Germany. On November 8th, troops captured the city of Metz, and entered the Saar Valley. After the attack and their German Defenses were weakened, it was the first time Allies were on German soil.

    The Battle of the Bulge

    Hitler was trying to plan a counter atttack against the Allied forces ever since the destruction that was caused on DDay, So Hilter launched an attack on the Ardennes which is a dense, hilly forest. This created a bulge at the American lines and was a complete surprise attack on the Allies. After fighting and the loss of heavy causalities, Germans started to retreat and the Allies regained control of the land.

    Closing of the Ruhr Pocket

    Allied forces moved close towards the Rhine river and the Ruhr Valley. They encircled the German troops and were able to trap them. The Germans were giving up hope and the commander ended up committing suicide. The rest of the German army in the "Ruhr" pocket had to surrender and that was a total of 325,000 soliders.

    Attack on Berlin

    The Soviet army was pushing the Germans back and trying to recapture the land that was taken by the enemies. In January of 1945 the Russians landed on German soil. Hitler ordered for defense systems to be put up around the city. He was in hiding under ground in Berlin. Then the soviets drove into the German capital with tanks and fought for two weeks. Hitler committed suicide in a bunker in Berlin. Five days after the fall of Berlin, the German government surrendered. The war was now over.
