NC State University was founded on march 7th 1887 thanks to The Morrill Land Grant Act, passed by the federal government in 1862, which allotted state land for construction of colleges and universities.

The brand-new school held its first classes in the fall of 1889 with 72 students, six faculty members and one building. Fifty-one young men from North Carolina showed up that October for the first weeks of class. During that first academic year, the class grew to 72, who each paid $20 in annual tuition, $8 a month for board, 75 cents a month for laundry services and $12.50 a year for books, stationery, fuel, lights and medical care.

At 115 feet tall, this memorial contains 1,400 tones of concrete and sits on a 700 ton concrete base. The Bell Tower does not actually contain bells, but rather speakers that are controlled from the nearby Holladay Hall. A World War 1 Memorial.

North Carolina Governor (and NC State alumnus) James B. Hunt, Jr., allotted the initial 355-acre parcel of land for the university's Centennial Campus. The land had previously been part of the Dorothea Dix hospital.
