Original site used for timber cutting, cattle grazing and as a brick-makers field.

The high-ground south of the yarra overlooking Melbourne was reserved as parkland for a future vice-regal residence.

Boat houses were established along the Yarra River and by 1895 six buildings were located to the east of the existing boat sheds.

The area was constantly flooded until it was straightened and widened from 1896-1900 to control flooding.

A new recreation reserve incorporating, Alexandra ave, South Yarra drv, and the gardens was created and named Alexandra Park. They featured a star-shaped flowerbed which was used for floral displays and symbolised the Federation Star, a popular emblem after Federation in 1901.
