Alessandro Volta was born on the 18th of Febuary 1745. He was born in Como which is in Italy.

In 1774 He was appointed as professor of physics at the Royal School in Como.

In 1776-77 Volta studied the chemistry of gases. He discovered methane by collecting the gas from marshes. He devised experiments such as the ignition of methane by an electric spark in a closed vessel.

On the 5th of March 1827 Alessandro Volta died in Como in Italy. The term Volt was named in honour of his last name.
