Afghanistan/ Kite Runner Timeline

  • Hassan's Birth

    When Amir reflects on his relationship with Hassan he says, " It was there, in that little shack that Hassn was born in the winter of 1964" (6). This is an important event because this talks about Hassan's birth the bith of one of the main character in the book.
  • Hassan looses his mother

    Like Amir, Hassan also looses his mother, " Hassan lost his less than a week after he was born, she ran off with a clan of travling singers and dancers" (6) The significance of this event is to show the loss of someone who would have been very dear to one of the main charcters.
  • Baba started building the orphanage

    Later on we learn that to attone for his sins, " In the late 1960's when I was 5 or 6, Baba decided to build the orphanage" (13). This becomes more important later on in the book because you learn that the reason he did this was to try and attone for his sins. That he commited when he slept with Ali's wife
  • Amir writes his first short story

    After him and hassan went to play, " that same night, I wrote my first short story," (30). This event represents the first time in Amir's life that he did something for himself and not to do it for Baba. Although, he does try to impress Baba with the story.
  • Hassan's rape

    When Hassan goes and trys to run for the kite he gets raped by Assef, and Amir hears, " from just aroud the corner, I could hear Assef's quick, rythmic grunts," (77). Although Assef didn't beat up Hassan to get the kite like he said he would, instead he rapes hassan and lets him keep the kite.
  • Amir and Hassan win the kite fighting competition

    During the winter of 1975 Hassan and Amir won the kite figting contest, " You won, Amir Agha! You won! We won, we won," (66). This was the happiest moment of Amir's young life and he will never forget it. He also got to share it with Hassan.
  • Amir's birthday

    While Amir is trying to avoid Hassan, " [he] turned 13 that summer of 1976," (93). Baba decideds to throw Amir a very big and lavish party, with alot of people that Amir doesn't know.
  • Amir's attempt to get rid of Hassan

    A couple days after Amir's party he has an idea of how to make sure one of the leaves, " I lifted Hassan's mattress and planted my new watch and a handful of afghani bills under it," (104). Amir accuses Hassan of stealing and although Hassan didn't do it he admitts he did it. Hassan and Ali leave and go away and Amir never seems them again.
  • Soviet Troops

    " The first Soviet troops parachuted into Kabul"(2). the Soviet union took over Kabul starting on Dec. 27, 1979
  • America

    In 1983 Amir and Baba moved to America, " Baba loved the idea of America," (125). Since the soviet union came Baba and Amir had too be smuggled out of Afghanistan and they went to America.
  • Amir's Graduation

    After going to America a few years later, " That summer of 1983 I graduated from high school," (131). Although he was 20 he stilled graduated from high school in America, and Baba was proud of him for once.
  • Amir's wedding

    For Amir's wedding, "Baba spent $35,000 nearly his life's savings," (169). The importance of this quote to me is that Baba finally respects Amir so much that one of his last dying wishes was to give his son a big wedding.
  • Baba's death

    A couple weeks after the wedding Amir and Soraya helped Baban to bed, "And he never woke up," (173). This event impacts the book because the one person who Amir looked up to in his life is now gone and he won't know what to do.
  • Amir becomes a published author

    After Amir writes his first book and sends it to New York, " He became a published Novelist," (183). This is Amir's dream come true and what he has worked for his whole life in America.
  • Soviet troops leaving

    "The last of the Soviet troops left Afganistan" (2). After ten years of the Soviets being in Kabul they finally left.
  • Amir learns Baba's secret

    While trying to get Amir to go get Sorab, Rahim Kahn tells him that Ali was sterile and he says "I think you know who," (222). During this quote Rahim Khan is trying to tell Amir that Hassan is his half brother.
  • Pakistani and the Taliban

    "As early as 1994, Pakistani intelligence officers began funneling arms, money , and supplies to Mullah Omar's men as well as military advisers to help guide them in battle"(3). Pakistani saw that they could get smething out of this so they started helping out the Taliban take over
  • Afghanistan without a leader

    "By the summer of 1994 power was anarchically divided among competing warlords and individual fiefdoms"(2). After the Soviets left Afghanistan was left without a leader forcing Afghanistan to go into complete chaous
  • The Taliban Takeover

    " By the end of 1994 Mullah Omar had nearly 12,000 followers and was rolling up the warlords to the north and east"(2). This is the start of the Taliban reign.
  • Sorab comes to America

    After all that happened in Afghanistan Amir and Sorab, "Arrived home about seven months ago," (357). This event marks the start of Amir and Sorab's new life. Also now Amir can Atone for all the sins he made against Hassan.
  • 9/11

    "attack on the world trade center in New York. Led by Osama Bin Ladin"(3)this event is what sparked the U.S. into joining the war in Afghanistan
  • Bush annonces strike against Taliban

    Bush annonces strike against Taliban
    " Bush gave the Taliban an ultimatum to hand over Mr. bin Ladin" (3). The Taliban did not meet any of the requirements that the U.S. had, and therefore they sent troops to go and put an end to the Taliban
  • invasion in Afghanistan

    "The 2001 invasion succeded in dislodging Al Qaeda and removing the Taliban from power" (1). the U.S. teamed up with other forces and fought back against the Taliban
  • initial plans for withdrawn american forces

    "Through initial plans called for American combat forces to begin withdrawning from Afghanistan in the summer of 2011" (1). Although they had an empty promise.
  • current withdrawl of U.S. forces

    "United States will have forces in the country until at least the end of 2014" (1). This is now the current expected date for the U.S. to start withdrawing troops.
