Adobe PDF first started as a dream and idea to make an office filled with paper everywhere to one with none at all. He wanted to create something that could make and send any type of document to anyone with a system that would link up computers together to share these pieces of digital paper to one another -

Later it would win an award at Comdex in the Fall where the technology won a "Best of Comdex award" and it had a name at the time and it was I.P.S which stood for "Interchange PostScript". And in 1993 the tools to view and create PDF-files Acrobat was released but its first version was of no use to the Prepress Community and with its high prices starting at $695 for personal and $2,495 for a network also an extra $50 dollars for Adobe Reader but the prices would lower down and a free version. -

In November Adobe launched Acrobat 3.0 (Amber) along with PDF 1.2 specifications. It was the first version that was really used by the prepress environment besides form other prepress options were available to. Also what increased its popularity was was a plug-in to view PDF files in NetScape browser and was possible to link to HTML pages and vice versa it also made its way into the graphic arts industry. But many vendors tried to push it off the ground the market was slow to react towards it. -

The release of PDF/X-1 standard came out and it was major step forward it was made to fix reliability issues and was based off PDF 1.2 specifications. It was a file which all fonts were included, all high res are embedded on it and so on it also had extra operators that are described in Adobe technote 5188. -
Small update
Mid 2000 Adobe released a new illustrator app which was weird for some people to comprehend since they used to released a new version of PDF with an also new version of Acrobat but still it had one amazing feature that it could run PDF 1.4 and it had a transparency feature. -
Adobe 5 (Brazil)
With Acrobat 5 came with PDF 1.4 and tons of people were very excited to see what the specs are for these new versions for prepress some upgraded features were display overprints, perform batch operations which can be used, among others to export folders full of PDF files to EPS-es, and improved color system called "ACE" which provided better finer control.But was more efficient for non-prepress users in the most enhancements of Acrobat 5 and PDF 1.4. -
Acrobat 6 (Newport)
Acrobat 6 was announced and PDF 1.5 as well with new features that would immediately and some that would come later due to how long it would take to implement them the new stuff included support layers, improved support for tagged PDF, and improved compression techniques including object streams and JPEG 2000 compression's. -

Vegas a.k.a Acrobat 7 was being released and has been shipped out for purchase along with PDF 1.6 with their improvements including improved encryption algorithm, PDF 1.6 files can be used as a kind of ‘container’ file format by offering the possibility to embed files into a PDF, major new feature is the ability to embed 3D data and within this can also be useful for graphic arts -

Adobe Acrobat 8 Release
It introduced one interesting new feature. instead of using PDF 1.7 as its default file format, it sticks to PDF 1.6. It has also become easier to save documents as an older PDF version. Other features are: Better menus and toolbars, and the ability to save forms in Adobe Reader 8. -

The application allows you to embed multiple files and data types into a Portfolio, which is similar to a ZIP file. It is unclear if this way of bundling data will become popular. Also offers good support for industry standards. -

This release focused on PDF editing and integrated cloud services. this increased sharing and storage for users if they needed it. They redesigned Edit Text and Images tools let users update text directly in PDF, automatically wrap paragraph text, search and replace words in a PDF file, and crop, adjust, or replace images.
