    The invention of the printing press
    This allowed mass production of documents allowing ideas to spread in this time. The majority of people couldn't read at this time, only the rich people. They used this invention to make bibles.
  • Publication of the first journal.

    The first journal to be made was 'The philisophical journal of the royal society'. It was published by scientists and engineers, however only the richest of people could read at this time. This allowed ideas to be shared and science to be advanced.
  • First magazine published in London.

    First magazine published in London.
    Technology was improved at this time, allowing monthly printing. The general interest and improvement of technology shows that more people were able to read, however the majority of people still couldn't read at this time.
  • The first major newspaper was released in the UK.

    The first major newspaper was released in the UK.
    At this point technology was now allowing daily printing. People were able to find out what happened yesterday and react today, which speeded up events massively. This release also created many reporters which meant there were much more jobs available.
  • The first ever telephone was created.

    This meant that people were able to communicate in real time over long distances through a device.
  • Home telephones became available to the public.

    Home telephones became available to the public so that they could communicate through a telephone device. However not everyone had one because of the expence, only the richer population,
  • BBC radio began broadcasting.

    BBC radio had their first ever broadcast, and the government owned the broadcasters. It was the first ever mass media transmitted directly into peoples homes. There were millions bought.

    The internet was invented by the milatary and the reason behind the name is because it is intternal and looks like a net. The reason behind it being invented was because if one military base was destroyed, the others could still communicate and see which ones had been destroyed.

    The cable TV became widely available to the UK and allowed the transmission of hundreds of channels, this also lays the groundwork for broadband.
  • The first mobile phone to go on sale in the UK.

    The first mobile phone to come out cost 2,000 pounds. It was created for business people as it was so expensive so not many people could afford it. It was 1kg and there was around 30 minutes talk time on it.
  • Satellite TV (SKY) became available to the UK.

    This was the first very hi-tech piece of technology to be created and allowed even more channels and now enables reporting live and direct from the scene to our TV screens. To date there are 10 million subscribers.
  • First text message ever sent.

    This suddenly became the most popular form of instant communication from when it began. There are now at least 1 billion texts sent every single week. The first text ever sent read 'merry christmas'.
  • The world wide web became available to the public.

    Web 1.0. This enabled the public to serarch for information and buy things.
  • 3G mobile became available.

    3G mobile became available.
    3G mobile became available to the public, it allows recordings of images and films. Because of this, eveyone is now a reporter as they can record images and upload them in both good ways and bad.
  • Web 2.0 emerges

    At this point the internet had become all about social networking. Eg. Bebo and Myspace.
  • 4G mobile became available.

    High speed internet became available for mobile phones.
  • Web 3.0 begins to emerge.

    Web 3.0 begins to emerge.
    Nowasdays the internet is becoming more of a tool that finds and arranges things on yor behalf. An example of this is new iphone 4s which allows you to ask it questions and it will speak back to you with an answer.
  • BBC begins broadcasting television in the UK.

    BBC begins broadcasting television in the UK.
    Television was first broadcasted in the UK, and was straight away am incredibly powerful media, where the public were able to share opinions. This also meant new jobs available as TV reporters. The role off BBC back then was to: inform, educate and entertain. Today there are 24 million TV's in the UK.
