Two hundred and fifty years ago there was no universal education, and many people could not read. Of those who could, many could not afford books or newspapers - they were a luxury. But with changes in society and culture, people were starting to demand independent access to news, literature and contemporary ideas.

The 1st Central Library was destroyed in a fire on 11th January 1879. The determination of the library staff and Birmngham residents helped to save 550 books from the Shakespeare collection. -

The 3rd incarnation of Cenral Library was opened on 12th January 1974. This building was reputed to be the largest non-national public library in Europe. -
