    August 28, 1939, the Nazi-Soviet Pact was signed in Moscow. Under the terms of the agreement, both countries promised to remain neutral if either country became involved in a war.
  • The Invasion of Poland

    Germany launched a full invasion on Poland. Poland's army was no match for the new technology that Germany had. While the Polish army was stuck fighting on the ground Germany's aircraft was far more sufficiated. This marked the start of Wold War II. Poland was not able to guard its 1750 miles of border from the Germans and their superior war equipment.

    Prime Minister King hoped that Canada’s involvement in the war would be limited
    Canada introduced the war tax on September 12, 1939 to help fund the war. Canadian’s were convinced that Germany was a threat when a passenger liner named Athenia was torpedoed and 200 passengers died including and a young girl from Hamilton Ontario.

    Belgium felt they were safe from Hilter because they were neutral.

    May 27, 1940 a heavy fog rolled in and covered over the French Channel, The German’s were not aware that British ships crossed undetected and about 300,000 soldiers were rescued and brought back to England safely.

    The Germans demonstrated they had superior warfare strategies while the French relied on outdated defensive tactics used in World War I

    The Germans took Paris on June 14, 1940 and attacked the Maginot Line that the French relied very heavily to protect them.

    The name given to Germany's invasion of Russia.
    This was the largest military attack of world war II.
    Hitler was quoted as saying “when the attack on Russia starts the world will hold its breath.”
  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    The Japanese Navy launched a surprise attack on the United States naval base. The next day United States declared war on Japan which resulted in their entry of World War II.
    President Roosevelt declared December 7th as “a date which will live in infamy”
