    Slavery started in 1819 is all African Americans were used as slaves and did not get treated as real people. Mostly slaves were used on plantation farms in the south. Why they did not have slaves in the south was because they had machines and did not need to use slaves and the north were free states.

    The Missouri Compromise happened on September 19, 1819. Henry Clay and the congress were involved. Missouri and Maine were added into the Union. The North disagreed with this because there would be more slave states than free states. Henry Clay said Maine could join the free states.

    Dred Scott was a black man who wanted to sue his way back to freedom because he had lived in a free state. The Supreme Court would not look at his case. A slave was not allowed to sue because they were not considered citizens. In addition the North wanted the slaves to be free and that added to the tension between the North and the South.

    The election of 1860 happened on November 6,1860. Abe Lincoln was a Republican who became president. Abe ran against two Democrats, John Breckenridge and Steven Douglas. This election caused the Southern states to secede and form the Confederacy.

    The secession happened on December 24, 1860. Seven southern sates seceded from the Union after Abe Lincoln’s election. The South then spilt from the North and the war was about to begin. Also the Confederacy picked Jefferson Davis as their president.
