  • WWI

    Britian Declared total wart on Germany. It was a total war and lasted 4 years. 10,000,000 men were killed fighting in direct action. Countries went bankrupt with was expenditure.
  • 14 point peace plan offered

    President Woodrow WIlson offered peace plan to both sides of the war but neither accepted.
  • Russian Government Collapsed

    Russian government collapsed after a series of revolutions and was overtaken by the communists
  • Treat of Brest-Litovsk

    German mercissly demanded Russian recourses, including 54% industry and 34% population.
  • Keiserschlact

    King of all battles. Britian and frace, with the help of America after the sinking of the Lusitania were able to overturned the German soldiers and the german genrals called for peace.
  • 14 Point Peace Plan of 1918 Undertaken

    This was an idealistic plan by Woodrow Wilson, the President of the United States on how to have a new world of democracies with no war.
    The main points were:
    no secret diplomacys
    freedom of the seas
    disarmament for all
    subject people to govern themselves
    independent poland with access to the sea
    a legue of nations to supervise the peace
    Germans accepted this as it was the best deal they could get. The Brtish and French were ify but the financial and political power of the USA was hard to resist
  • Paris Peace Confrence 1919 - 1920 (part 1)

    Tiger Clemenceu was scared for frace. Western borders where in france and all that was protecting france was the Rhine river. Needed gaurentee germany would be weekend.
    David Lloyd George of Britian simarlily wanted to safegaurd Britian by destroying the German navy as they were across the channel.
    Orlando of Itally wanted to collect teritory.
    President Wilson had major effect. He won WWI for the allies and Britian and France owed huge war debts.
  • Paris Peace Confrence 1919 - 1920 (part 2)

    Wood row Wilson organised thhe creation of small nations such as Lativa to be formed and put in place some 'just' punishment for germany. The Legue of Nations was formed to Keep peace and promote world recovery. Germany was given blame for the war and was expected to pay all the reparations. Thus the treaty of versille was formed

    Allies treaty with defeated power Germany. Was based on a mix of idealism, political tactics, selfishness and fear, and blamed all of the war debt on Germany. The reparations they were forced to pay were in excess of $6 billion. France and Britian forced Germany to sign, but Woodrow Wilson of the USA did not sign even though he had much to do with the creation of the treaty.
    Germany felt signing this treat would have them treated better in the long run

  • League of Nations formed

    Legue of nations formed as a way to have world peace. USA did not going even though it was woodrow wilsons plan and Britian and France were left to lead.

    USA, Germany and the USSR were left out of the League at first causing long running problems.
    League took practicla steps to stop agression such as if anyone member was atacked all would help and all disputes were to be solved peacefully if possible

  • Crisis at the Ruhr

    Germany was behind in its payments on war debts to France, and France desperately needed to pay back the USA. So France invaded the Ruhr in 1923, Germanys main industrail area until the amount owed to France was paid by germany. Wrokers then went on strike, and with no goods more money began to be printed leaving it worthless. Inflation then took place and wiped out the value of savings and pensions. In 1922 I gold mark was worth 48 paper marks. By 1923 it was worth 1205358227.
  • Nazis try to take over.

    With the panic of germans in the economic crisi of inflation, hiltler and the Nazies tried to take over. he was easily stopped, but the made Hitler a nation figure who seemed to care about german welfare.
  • Streseman puts in place fulfillment

    Streseman, the new Chancellor of germany, calls of the strikes in the Ruhr (Rhineland), issues a new currency to fix the inflation problem, and begins a policy called fulfillment, which was the agreeing to resume paying war reparations. A calmer atmosphere in France and Britian returned and French troops were removed from the Ruhr.

  • The Dawes Plan 1924

    The Dawes plan gave practical relief to the reparations problem. It provided Germany with loans from america, who could then use that moeny to pay France and britian back, who could then pay America back for the original loans. (money go round) This took pressure off the European economies, prosperity grew and jobs increased. The 1920s era then began, a time full of jazz and what seemed like a stable world.
  • Treaty of Locarno

    Ensured france, german and belgium borders, in theory, from an attack from either side. If either side broke it, Britian and Italy promised to come in aid of the victim, being even handed to both france and germany.
  • Germany joined the League of Nations.

  • Kellog-Briand Pact 1928

    Briand - the french foreign minister and Kellog - American Secretary of state signed a pact renouncing war. 65 countries signed including Japan and the USSR. Russian communists were still feared at the time so its cooperation was a promising development. However, there was no penelty if the pact was broken.
  • The Young Plan, 1929

    Germanys reparations were reduced from 6.6 billion pound to 2 billion pound, as a way of further reconsilliation
  • The Deppresion Begins

    After large falls on wall street, USA buisness men went bankrupt, leaving loans unable to be paid and a fall in the USA economy. the USA then called in their loans from Britian, France and Germany who were unable to pay them leaving the world in a state of economice Depression. There were few jobs and little money to go round. War seemed like a wuick fix for many countries as it caused jobs, but was being carefully avoided after the great war in many countries.

  • Japanese conquest of Manchuria

    Japan blew up a rainway in Mancuria, China, and used it as an excuse to take over and set up a puppet state, manchukuo. The Chinese protested to the League of Nations who sent Lord Lytton to investigate. Japan was declared as the aggressor but no steps were taken to stop it. The League of Nations prestigue was destoryed.
  • Disarmament Confrence 1932

    Hitler offered for Germany to disarm if others agreed to aswell (a proposal he knew would be declined as of the Manchuria crisis in the East)

    Even though he did not have a majority, he blamed, communists, Jews and the Treaty of Versille for all of Germanys difficulties.

  • Hitler openly declares Germeny rearmament

    In defiance of the treaty of Versailles, Germany begins to openly rearm in 1934. Other countries could hardly disarm from that point on, but they were thinking of defense, not attack.
  • USSR joins the Legue of Nations

  • Nazis first attempt at anschluss

    The nazis at that point overestimated themselves and attemeed anschluss with Austria. Nazi fifth colomnists went into austria and demanded anschluss but Dolfuus, the Austian Chancellor refused. The fifth columnists the assinated Dolfuss and called hitler in for a take over. This then brough about world protest and Mussonlini of Italy reacted with force and sent troops to the Austrian borders. The Nazis then immidately backed down.
  • The stresa front

    The stresa front was formed by Britian, France and Italy in an attempt for collective security. It was set up to counter Hiltlers moves and contain him, but this largely consistd on Mussolini and Itlay as he had already show he was willing to take direct action.
  • The Abyssinian Crisis

    Mussolini used a border clash as an excuse to take of Abysinnia, a small african country. No Major agression was taken to stop him, even though France and Britian wanted to, the did not want to offend Mussolini as he was contain Hiltler in Europe and they did not want to strech there army as with the Manchuria crisis ragin in the East would already weaken there available force.
  • Hoare-Leval Plan

    The Hoare-Leval plan was the agreement to give Ital the majority of Abssinia for almost nothing.To the public, this seemed as a betrayal to the legue of nations by two of its strongest members. Popular opion was forced to apply santions on Mussolini and he was offended. If Britian and France would not support him then Hitler was his only alternative ally. Therefore, Italy, the keystone of the stresafront against germany was gone and the Legue of nations had openly failed to safeguard a country.
  • Reoccupation of the Rhineland.

    Hitler quickly took advantage of the Abyssinian crisis to send troops in the Rhineland, in order to commence building fortifications in the Industrial area. This was breaking both the Treaty of Versailles and the Treaty of Locarno. Although France had little strength and Germany had no tanks and only 7 planes, nobody called hitlers bluff because their govenment was bitterly dived and nobldy was sure of the support of England or Italy. Hitler had got away with breaking the treatys so easily.
  • Italian German Axis

    With Italian and British alliences no longer exsisting after the abyssinian crisis, and hitler and mussolini activly working together in the spanish civil war, they agreed to work together in an agreement called the Axis

    As japanese agression continued, Japan declared themselves as the peace keeper for all of East Asian and used the Anti-Cimintern Pact as a wat of keepin European countrys from interveinging.
  • Anti-Comintern Pact

    Offcial Pact between Germany and Japan agianst internation commusism, but it was infact an attempt to tie the USSR down with threats from the East and West.

  • Shooting Incident

    Japanese used the shooding incident in Peking as an excuse for all out war and with 18 months controlled most of Chilnas costal industrail cities.

    Italian German Axis now included a full military alliance
  • Spanish Civil War 1936 - 1939

    The increased italian and german cooperation showed britian and france as weak against the facists. When General Franco of spain decied to revolt against the republicans he sought for international help. German and Italy made in a point of national honour to help General Franco out in the civil war. It was also great practice for germany for future battles, as they got a chance to try our war equitment. Britian, France and the USA stayed neutral and therefore only Franco recieved worthwhile aid.
