  • Flixborough

    Cyclohexane leak at Nypro UK’s Flixborough, UK, plant caused an explosion which killed 28 workers and injured 36.
  • DSM

    A pipe fracture at DSM’s naphtha cracker undergoing start-up at Beek in the Netherlands, caused an estimated three to five tonne of hydrocarbons, mainly propylene, leakage. The explosion resulting from its ignition killed 14 and injured 107.
  • Roche

    Several kilograms of dioxin leaked from the manufacturing plant of Roche affiliate Icmesa in Seveso, northern Italy, and spread over a wide area. No one was killed directly by the leakage but there were concerns for the long term health of those affected.
  • Union Carbide

    A leak of 27 tonne of methyl isocyanate from Union Carbide India’s Bhopal pesticides plant kills around 7,000 people and injures a further 20,000.
  • Atofina’s Grande Paroisse

    An explosion in a storage hangar in which 300 tonne of ammonium nitrate granules were stored for recycling at Atofina’s Grande Paroisse fertiliser plant in Toulouse in southwest France kills 30 people and injures 200 more.
  • Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilisers

    An explosion at the Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilisers nitrophosphate production complex at Narmadanagar, India, kills vive workers and injures 30 others.
  • Formosa Plastic USA

    Formosa Plastic USA's polyvinyl chloride plant in central Illinois, US, suffered an explosion killing five workers and hospitalising a further five.
  • Truck

    A truck carrying ammonium nitrate overturns and explodes in Mihailesti, eastern Romania. Sixteen people died and a further 11 were injured.
  • Jiangsu Tianyin Chemical Industry

    Petrochemical plant of Jiangsu Tianyin Chemical Industry in Jiangsu province, eastern China, suffers an explosion which kills five and injures 11 workers.
  • BP’s Texas City

    Explosion and fire hits BP’s Texas City refinery killing 15 contract workers and injuring more than 170 people. BP attributed the explosion to a series of mistakes by its personnel before and during the start-up of an isomerisation process unit.
  • ilin Petrochemical

    Explosions at Jilin Petrochemical’s aniline plant, which killed 5 workers, resulted in the leakage of 100 tonne of aniline, benzene and nitrobenzene into the 1,850km Songhua river, a main water source to millions living in Heilongjiang in north eastern China.
