William Wrigley started out selling soap. To promote the soap, he gave baking powder to people who bought his soap. But, the baking powder came out being more popular then soap. So, he started selling baking powder. To promote this, he offered 2 packs of gum for whome bought the baking powder. But again, the gum was more popular that the baking powder. So, Wrigley decided to sell gum.

Scince it was WWII, lots of ingredients neede to make Juicy Fruit, Spearmint, and Doublemint were short, they couldn't make enough gum for everyone. So, instead of just changing the way of making the gum, Philips Wrigley a new owner just provided the gum to military poeple only. To have people remember the gum, Philip made an ad campaign that said remember this wrapper.

Also, gum is made out of a sapodilla tree which produces milky juice AKA latex.
