    POTSDAM CONFERENCE
    The Allied leaders of World War II met at Potsdam, Germany starting on July 16, 1945 to discuss conditions concerning the end of the war. In attendance were President H. Truman of the United States, Prime Minister Clement Atlee of Great Britain, and Joseph Stalin of the USSR. Tensions were high between the leaders because the Soviet Red Army was still occupying Eastern Europe and discussion of a "powerful new weapon." http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/images/ac00001/ac01860c.htm

    CONTAINMENT POLICY

    The United States policy of containment was formulated in 1946 by George Kennan in the "Long Telegram". The United States became involved in events around the world trying to stop the spread of Communism
  • TRUMAN DOCTRINE

    On March 12, 1947 President Harry Truman addressed a joint session of Congress in which he laid plans for helping Greece and Turkey fight off Communist rebels. The plan supported the US's policy of containment.
  • KOREAN WAR BEGINS

    The Korean War began on June 25, 1950 when North Korean forces invaded South Korea. At the time North Korea was a communist country supported by the Soviet Union, while the South was a democratic nation supported by the United States. An armistice was signed in 1953 and the two nations are still divided at the 38th parallel
