Organization
The 54th Massaschusetts Regiment is formed. It is led by Robert Shaw and was made up of mostly black men. -
Burn baby burn.
The men start to perform manual labor. They raid towns such as Darien, Georgia. They were also ordered to burn down this town. -
Taste of actions!
After intense training, the men see their 1st action at James Island. -
Fame
The 54th Regiment receives fame due to their unsuccessful attack on the Confederate soldiers at Battery Wagner. The costs were nearly 54 men, 200 wounded, and 48 never accounted for. Shaw also loses his life. -
Honor.
William Carney was the first black man to recieve the Medal of Honor. This was for his service on July 18, 1863.
