5 Historical events that shaped education

  • Public High Schools

    Public High Schools
    Public high schools were created to prepare young men for the world. This allowed young men to get education further than primary school or Latin grammar. Another thing is that this was completely free to attend giving people the equal chance to better themselves (p.122). We now see public schools as being one of the primary source of children's education today.
  • Plessy V Ferguson

    Plessy V Ferguson
    The federal courts voted in favor of having separate but equal facilities, thus including schools. This was the first step to getting a better education for African American children (p.150).
  • Post World War 1

    Post World War 1
    After WW1 states, started to enforce child labor laws and attendance laws. A direct result of this was that school enrollment had significantly increased and continued to increase every decade. The youth was being educated more as a whole (p. 155).
  • Brown v. Board of education

    Brown v. Board of education
    This case is significant in terms of standing up for their children's rights. The facilities were not equal nor could they be made equal. A result of the ruling of this case was important because it intergrated cultures. All people would benefit from this new way of education according to the text (p.151-152).
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The NCLB act was an attempt to have states, districts and schools held accountable for their achievement levels. They had a series of requirements set in place for students. This act, is what drove Americans to see that education needed an improvement, and that someone had to responsible for these children's education (p. 164).
