Cause: Japan wanted to prevent Western penetration by gaining strength through industrialization. This desire was started when the US commodore Matthew C. Perry forced opened Japan. Effect: With the Meiji Restoration, Japan was able to industrialize by gaining foreign technology. Cause: The Japanese wanted to open Josun Dynasty, which was closed to foreign trade, to trade. Japan sent armed boats to force open Korea. Japan, met with strong resistance, succeeded in achieveing the Treaty of Ganghwa, which opened up Korea. Effects: After the Treaty of Ganghwa, the Josun Dynasty beceme more open to foreign powers, such as Russia and Japan. This allowde more chances for foreign interference. Also, the Chinese control over Korea was weakened.

Cause: The Tonghak rebellion resulted in to China send troops at the request of Korea. As a consequence, Japan sent their own troops there as well. This competition for Korea eventually led to the Sino- Japanese War. Effect: The vicotry of Japan at the Sino- Japanese War allowed Japan to gain more control of Korea. Also, it had won the rights to interfere in Korea without having to deal with the Chinese.

Cause: Queen Min was pro-Russian, and rejected Japanese influence in Korea. The Japanese regarded her as a threat to foreign expansion. As a result, the Japanese assasinated her. Effect: The assanisation of Queen Min resulted in a weakened
support for Russia, and more control of the Japaense over Korea.
