Creation of the Ho Chi Minh trail: Vietnam/Cambodia
During 1959
Group 559 creates a route along the Vietnam and Cambodian border. It is a supply route between North Vietnam to Vietcong forces in South Vietnam. -
United States becomes actively involved: South Vitetnam
American helicopters arrive in South Vietnam. This delivered troops into Vietnam. -
Operation Ranchhand: South Vietnam
Early 1962
Agent Orange is used to clear vegetaion so the Vietcong cant hide. It got rid of a lot of cover for the Vietcong. -
Gulf of Tonkin Attack: North Vietnam
South Vietnam attacks 2 North Vietnam islands. It caused President Johnson to retaliate and we loose 2 airplanes in the effort. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution: US
Congess passes the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. This gives President Johnson the ability to do whatever he wants to defend southeast Asia. -
Rolling Thunder Begins
Rolling Thunder was a bombing raid. Its objective was to try to get North Vietnam to stop supporting guerrilas in South Vietnam. -

The United States tried to offer economic aid for peace to North Vietnam. They refused. -
President Johnson commits over 60,000 troops: Vietnam
President Johnson raises combat strength by sending more troops to Vietnam. Korea and Austrailia send their forces for support. -
1st Major Battle for American Troops: Chu Lai
The US army launches Operation Starlight and kill 700 Vietnamese troops using ground, ships, and air forces. The US has a huge victory. -
Operation Junction City: South Vietnam
This was one of the biggest airstrikes of all time. The objective was to rid of Vietcong bases and military headquarters. The US were able to capture stores, weapons, and equipment. -
Tet Offensive begins: South Vietnam
Tet Offensive was military strategy by the Vietcong. They attacked many towns but there were a ton of casualties. Tet Offensive was a disaster. -
Khe Sanh attacked by Vietcong: South Vietnam
Khe Sanh was an outpost. The US fights the Vietcong by bombing them. By the end of the battle Khe Sanh isnt needed for defense and is torn down. -
My Lai Massacre: South Vietnam
The U.S. Charlie Company kills 200 innocent civilians. It raised questions about the conduct of war. -
Nixon takes office: US
Richard Nixon promises to withdrawl troops and negociate with Vietnam and help South Vietnam. -
Operation Menu: North Vietnam
Nixon authorizes Operation Menu despite government restrictions. The US drops over a half million tons of bombs on Cambodia over 4 years. -
All but 133,000 troops have come home: South Vietnam
Over 2/3 of American troops have been killed in 2 years. South Vietnam is now responsible to fight North Vietnam with only 1 million troops. -
Peace talks break down: Paris
North Vietnam and the US have peace talks. -
Peace talks resume: Paris
North Vietnam and the US continue peace talks. -
Cease fire signed: Warring parties countries
Henry Kissinger signs a cease fire. This ends US involvement in Vietnam. -
Nixon Resigns: US
This leaves South Vietnam without its biggest ally. -
Last casualties for the US: Saigon's Tan Son Nhurt Airport
At 4:03 am 2 Marines are killed and are the last casualties for the US. North Vietnam enters Saigon and end the war. This war killed over a million Vietcong troops and a quarter of a million South Vietnam troops as well as thousands of civilians.
