  • Indian Removal Act

    Andrew Jackson signed this act to move Native Americans to predestined locations (reservations) and away from areas that the Federal government wanted.
  • Nat Turner Slave Revolt

    Deadliest revolts by slaves killed 60 whites and called for stricter laws against educating blacks and allowing other freeedoms.
    56 slaves were killed for causing an uprising and 200 other blacks were killed due to the revolt
  • Nullification Crisis

    South Carolina decides to make a law that nullifies recent tax laws by the federal government, hinting at their idea to secede from the Union
  • Secession

    To leave a county and become your own boss.
  • Battle of the Alamo

    Texans held off Mexican army but were defeated, others joined the Texas revolution afterwards.
  • Battle of San Jacinto

    Final battle in the Texas revolution; Texas defeated Mexican army and won independence.
  • Temperance Movement (ongoing)

    Movement to outlaw Alcohol by women and the church because it was perceived the cause of bad things.
  • Manifest Destiny

    It was meant to be that America would spread to the Pacific Ocean
  • Trail of Tears

    Cherokee people from Georgia and Florida were moved from their homelands to designated area in Oklahoma. About 4000 Cherokee people died.
  • Oregon Country

    Settlers moved west toward Oregon. Mountain men were their guides continued the forging of the Oregon Trail, a major route across the US.
  • Annexation of Texas

    Texas was voluntarily accepted into the US as the 28th state led to the Mexican War.
  • Mexican War

    War began quickly after Texas became a state over the boundary and ownership of Texas land in US and Mexico.
  • Gold Rush

    Gold was discovered in California and many rushed to make it rich. Most didn't but some made 5 times as much money as they had. It did increase population and travel to the Pacific Ocean.

    Ended the Mexican War marking a boundary between America and Mexico.

    First convention to discuss woman's rights, marks a major step forward for woman.
  • Underground Railroad

    A series of safe places to lead and hide runaway slaves toward the North and out of the states. Led to the Fugitive Slave Law.

    1850 National Woman's Rights Convention,Susan B. Anthony joined the fight in 1952
  • Compromise of 1850

    According to the compromise, Texas would give up land but, will be given 10 million dollars The territories of New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah would be organized without mention of slavery. The slave trade would be abolished in the District of Columbia but slavery could continue. Last was the Fugitive Slave Law requiring slaves to be returned.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe

    Top selling book in the 1800's revealing the nature of slavery. Added to stereotypes of white farmers and black slaves but encouraged the abolition cause.
  • Gadsen Purchase

    The final purchase from Mexico in claiming the current continental US fulfilling Manifest Destiny.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    New territories added and decision to be slave or free state by popular vote.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    A war within Kansas over the decision to become slave-state or free-state.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott sued for his freedom and lost because he was not a citizen and had no rights. Victory for slavery.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry

    Abolitionist John Brown took over a weapons arsenal to get weapons to establish a colony for runaway slaves. Emotions regarding slavery are building toward violence.
  • Crittenden Compromise

    A failed ammendment trying to reinstate the Missouri Compromise division of slave-states and free-states. It was trying to alleviate tensions between North and South.
