Japanese troops landed on the island to construct an airfield. The U.S came in and seized it. Japan lost in this war and 24,000 of japanese men were killed in this battle. -
Stalingrad
Hitler sent 6th army to capture Stalingrad, but Stalin stood up and fought back. Germans controlled 90% of this ruined city. General Paulus begged hitler to retreat, but he refused to retreat and said the city was " to be held at all cost." the city was destroyed and cost the soviets 1 million of their soldiers. -

This battle started as a suprised battle. The Romels army fought back fiercely, and by november his forces fell back. -
D-Day
This was one of tthe largest land and sea attacks in history. 2,700 men died on the beaches that day. British, American, French, and Canadian troops fought their way onto the beach. The reason this is called d-day is because of general Dwight D. Eiseenhower. -
