    There is evidence, but no conclusive proof that an Englishman by the name of George Mallory and partner Andrew Irvivine reached the summit in 1924. Mallory and Irvine were last sighted from teir base camp just short of the summit and looked certain to make it. They never returned from that climb so there can be no conclusive proof.
