    Into the Khumbu Icefall
Khumbu Icefall is a icefall at the head of the Khumbu glacier. The icefall is 18,000 feet up on the slopes of Everest. On the South Col route, which Jon Krakauer and his team took, is considered one of the most dangerous stages of the journey. The icefall is a very unpredictable thing. The large towers of ice or seracs found at the icefall have been known to collapse suddenly. Blocks as big as cars or even the size of houses have been known to break off the icefall.

Nawang nailed by severe bout of edema
Edema is a condition where the body, mainly feet and legs, swells from fluid accumulation in the body's tissues. This is sometimes caused by gravity or sitting in one place for a long time. This pulls water down into your legs causing edema. If you push in the swollen area for 15 seconds, if the swollen spot leaves a dimple, you will know if you have edema. Edema cannot be cured, but you can treat the conditions that cause it such as elevating your leg, this will make the fluids move around.
