2012 Local Government Elections: Key Dates for Voters

  • Final day to register on Electoral Roll

    Final day to register on Electoral Roll
    In order to vote at the next council election, residents will need to have enrolled on the electoral roll by today. If residents have not enrolled, and they are eligble to vote, then they will not be able to participate in the local government elections, and face the prospect of a $70.00 fine at the completion of the election.
  • Election Office Opened

    The offices for each municipality open today. For any further information, please visit the VEC website.
  • Nominations for Council open

    Nominations for Council open
    Nominations for residents wishing to become a Council Candidate open today. More information on this procedure can be found at the Victorian Electoral Commission website.
  • Nominations for Council close

    The Ballot Draw to determine where Councillors are placed on the ballot paper is also held on this day.
  • Postal voting begins

    For councils conducting postal elections, ballots will be mailed from today to residents.
  • Postal votes end

    Residents voting in postal elections must have sent there reply paid envelopes to the Returning Officer by today.
  • Election Day

    For attendance elections, residents must vote today between 8am and 6pm at designated areas. For a list of designated Rotary clubs, schools, and halls where voting booths are stationed, pleased visit the VEC website and click on your council.
  • Results declared

    Results declared
    Successful candidates are notifed by phone through the Returning Officer whether or not they have been successful. Results of all elections will be posted in local newspapers as soon as possible, and will be available on the VEC website.
