1942-1953 Timeline

  • D-Day

    The Allied powers push onto the bay of Normandy, France during WWII. It was the largest invasion by sea ever organized. This battle was a large win for the Allies against Nazi Germany.
  • Port Chicago Disaster

    On July 17, 1944, the Port Chicago disaster occurred. The disaster was a fatal artillery explosion that happened in the Port Chicago Naval Magazine in Port Chicago, California. The detonation of the products inside of the port killed 320 people.
  • Adolf Hitler Commits Suicide

    On the 30th of April, 1945, the leader of the Nazi party, Adolf Hitler, took his own life via a gunshot to his head. It is believed that he killed himself in a bunker located within Berlin.
  • Surrender of Germany

    After a long war, Germany is forced to surrender at Reims, France. The surrender was monumental and marked the end of World War II.
  • America Drops Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima

    As a result of Japan's actions in the war, America dropped an atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. The blast killed an estimated 80,000 innocent citizens.
  • Second Atomic Bomb is Dropped in Nagasaki

    3 Days after the bombing of Hiroshima, America dropped another bomb on the city of Nagasaki, Japan. The bomb, named 'Fat Man', killed around 70,000 people.
  • Berlin Blockade

    The Berlin Blockade was an effort made by the USSR to limit the spread of American ideas within Europe. This was the first major stand-off within the Cold War.
  • NATO Is Formed

    In 1949, the United States, Canada, and many Western European nations established the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to guarantee combined protection against the Soviet Union. NATO was established as America's first peacetime military alliance (outside of the Western Hemisphere).
