    D-Day was the start of Operation Overlord - which was the largest invasion in history. Over 160,000 troops from Britain and allied countries landed in Normandy during the Second World War. It marked the beginning of the liberation of France from the Nazis.

    The first and second use of the atom bomb brought the United States victory after a long, difficult war. The bombing of the two port cities resulted in about 140,000 of Hiroshima's 350,000 population being killed in the blast, and at least 74,000 people died in Nagasaki.

    The war began when thousands of North Korean troops invaded the 38th Parallel and declared war on South Korea. North Korea was backed by the Soviet Union so, naturally, the United States had to get involved. In the end, neither side gained any land, so it was pretty pointless.
