  • Yalta Conference

    World War II meeting of the heads of government of the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union, represented by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and General Secretary Joseph Stalin, respectively, for the purpose of discussing Europe's post-war reorganization.
  • Potsdam Conference

    The last of the World War II heads of state conferences, President Truman, Soviet Premier Stalin and British Prime Ministers Churchill and Atlee discussed post-war arrangements in Europe, frequently without agreement. Future moves in the war against Japan were also covered.
  • Iron Curtain Speech

    Churchill gave his now famous "Iron Curtain" speech to a crowd of 40,000.

  • Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine was an international-relations policy set forth by the U.S. President Harry Truman in a speech, stating that the U.S. would support Greece and Turkey with economic and military aid to prevent their falling into the Soviet sphere.

    An intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949.
