1920s and Prohibition

  • Making the amendment

    Congress passed the 18th amendment to ban alcohol. It was created by Wayne Wheeler in 1917 and it made it illegal to sell or transport any alcohol.
  • Women voting

    The 19th amendment was passed, which gave the right for women to vote.
  • Amendment ratified

    The amendment was ratified by the 3/4s of states that were needed to make it a constitutional law in 1919
  • Prohibition

    This was a ban on things to do with alcohol. It was illegal to sell or produce it. It lasted from 1920 to 1933.
  • Terrorism

    In 1921 a white supremacist group known as the KKK took place. They targeted many groups of people.
  • Scofflaw

    The Boston Herald came up with an idea to make a name for anyone who broke the law and drank alcohol. They offered up money to whoever came up with the best name. Two people came up with the same word, scofflaw.
  • Stock Market

    The stock market in the United States crashed in 1929. It was the beginning of the Great Depression.
  • Violence

    The amount of gang violence was on a rise in 1929. It was very high in almost every city in America. During the prohibition, the amount of crime rose a lot.
  • Roosevelt

    In 1932, Franklin Roosevelt was elected president. The public was against the prohibition and once he was elected it was known that there would be an end to it.
  • Prohibition abolished

    In 1933, the ban on alcohol was abolished. It became the only constitutional amendment to be repealed by the US Congress.
