1876-1900 Timeline

  • Rutherford B. Hayes

    Rutherford B. Hayes becomes the 19th President of the United States of America.
  • End of the Reconstruction

    The Federal Government pulls out of the South and the Democrates return to power. This causes much of the progress made in the South to come undone because there is no Federal presence to keep the progress.

    The Great Railroad Strike

    Workers at the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad went on strike because their wages had been cut for the third time that year. This caused workers around the country to go on strike. Even though their strike was not effective, it allowed for the first labor unions to be formed later on.
  • Thomas Edison - the lightbulb

    Thomas Edison makes the lightbulb, allowing for families to have light in their homes and established better factories around the world. The lightbulb is often credited with starting the second Industrial Revolution because it allowed for factories to run faster, smoother, and into the night.
  • James A. Garfield

    James A. Garfield becomes the 20th president of the United States of America.
  • Chester A. Arthur

    Chester A. Arthur becomes the 21st President of the United States.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    The government passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which banned all Chinese from coming to the United States.
  • Immigration Act of 1882

    The Immigration Act is passed, limiting the number of immigrants who can come into America. This was the first of many Immigration laws to be passed, and it set standards for the people who wanted to enter America.
  • Grover Cleveland

    Grover Cleveland became the 22nd President of the United States.
  • The Dawes Act

    Congress passed the Dawes General Allotment Act which split Indian tribes into individual family units rather than a single tribe group.
  • Benjamin Harrison

    Benjamin Harrison became the 23rd President of the United States.
  • Iron Strike

    The Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers strikes at one of Andrew Carnegie's steel mills. The state militia is called in to break the strike, which in turn destroyed the union.
  • Pullman Strike

    Workers at the Pullman rail car factory go on strike. The American Railway Union backed them in their strike. The strike is broken by the arrest of the union's leader, Eugene Debs.

    Philippine-American and Spanish-American Wars

    These wars helped turn the United States into a World Power. (The end date is actually 1902, but this timeline only goes to 1900 so I will add the end on the next one)
