In the US Senate Brooks attacked Summer with a walking cane and beat him bad that the recovery took him a total of 3 years. -
Scott v. Sanford
Dred Scott was an African American former slave who wanted his citizenship because he was situated in a free state. The ruling was that because he was from African decent he was not allowed citizenship and could therefore not sue. -
LeCompton Constitution
This was the second constitution that was written by proslavery reporters. This permitted slavery, denied free blacks from living in their territory, and only allowed men to vote. -
Lincoln's House Divided Speech
This was an address given by Abraham Lincoln prior to his presidency. In Springfield, Illinois, he gave this after he accepted the republican nomination for the states U.S. senator. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
There was major tension between Lincoln and Douglas about slavery, the union, and whether African Americans should be given citizenship. Douglas believed that the people and states should decide on whether they should be a slave state or not. The North agreed, but the South didn't. -
Harper's Ferry
John Brown was an abolitionist that was against slavery. He had led a raid to Harper's Ferry to get weapons to help slaves become free. He was unsuccessful and was caught, accused of treason, and was hung. This increased the tensions between slavery drastically. -

John Brown was an abolitionist who was against the idea of slavery. He took charge of a church after their minister recently was murdered. He is known for the raid on Harper's Ferry for freeing some of the slaves. He was unsuccessful and was caught and hung since he committed and act of treason. -
Election of 1860
4 candidates were participating in this election, Abraham Lincoln won the election due to the electoral college. 12 states left the union and joined the confederacy as a result of Lincoln winning. This would later on start the Civil War after the confederacy attacked Fort Sumner. -
Secession
Abraham Lincoln had won the election in 1860 and had made the tension increase. The establishment of the confederacy was caused by the secession of the South. Southerners feared that with the new antislavery president, the institution would soon be outlawed. -
Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Adress
Lincoln had given this speech with the purpose of stating the things he was and wasn't goin to do while in office. He stated he was going to stay neutral on the subject about slavery, wanted to prevent war as much as possible, and wanted to prevent states from ceding from the union. This did not end well and 12 states left the union and would later begin the Civil War.
