    Micheal Faraday is the once that discovered the connection between magnetism and electricity. Then he created the dynamo, this machine that generated electricity by moving a magnet through a coil of copper wire. Faraday used this electricity to power an electric motor and doing that led to the development of electrical generators.
  • Taiping rebellion

    This rebellion was lead by Hong Xiuquan. Hong believed he was the brother of Jesus and because of that he wanted to create a "Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace," where no one could be poor. Hong and his followers captured large territories in southeastern China adnd controlled the city of Najing. Qing soldiers, and French and British armies, attached Hong and his followers and the Taiping army was defeaed. Even though the Qing army won, the cost was great, mroe than 20 million chinese died..

    A conflict was happening with France over the disputed territory of Alsac and Loraine which has been a part of the Holy Roman Empire which included Prussia. The issues over Alsace and Lorraine started the feelings of nationalism in the south German States. Those states supported Prussia and the north German states. Then with the south German states help, Bismark secured a Prussian victory. Prussia won the war, and the peace treaty declared the unification of Germany.
  • Spanish-American War begins

    In February, the U.S, battleship Maine mysteriously exploded and the U.S immediately assumed that Spain was responsible. For spain, the war as a disaster. Cuba defeated Spain, the Spanish fleets were distroyed in the Philippines and Cuba. Within three months, the United States won the war.
  • Boxer rebellion

    Chinas humiliation by the west produced several nationalist movements who's intent were to restore Chinas glory. The most important group was the Harmonious Fists, or Boxers. The rebillion started when the Boxers started attaching missionaries and Chinese coverts to Chrisianity. In 1900's they laid sige to the foreign compunds in Beijing and held them hostage for 55 days. A few weeks later, foreign torrps of 20,000, captured Beijing adn suppressed the uprising.

    The war was caused by Russian competition with Japan over influence in Manchuria and Korea. Even though the Japanese won many battles, they couldn't get the Russians to surrender. Instead of surrendering, they two sides asked the U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt to help negotiate a peace treaty. The treaty gabe Japan control over Russian railway lines.
