    In 1733, the British Government passed the Molasses act but it was never strictly enforced, so they lowered the tax, but strictly enforced it. People were not very happy about this.

    By 1765 many British soldiers were stationed in North American colonies, and they needed shelter, food, etc. England wanted to get money for this from their colonists, so they passed the Stamp Act. This act said that if you wanted to print any material in North America you had to do so on the embossed papers imported from London. This was one of the main causes of the American Revolution.

In 1770, a group of protesters gathered around some soldiers and threw stuff at the soldiers, like rocks. They also threatened them. The soldiers shot and killed 5 protesters.

    In 1773, Parliament passed the Tea Act, this did not impose any new taxes, but it gave full control of the tea trade in the Americas to the British East India Company, which was in debt. They did this to stop smugglers because 80% of the tea consumed was smuggled, and make the company more money.

    The Boston Tea Party happened because of an organization called the Sons of Liberty. They strongly disagreed with all of the tea taxes. In December of 1773, they boarded British ships carrying tea and threw it all in the Boston Harbor.

    To punish the colony of Massachusetts, the parliament passed a lot of acts that took away all political rights of the people and closed the port of Boston and all economical activity. This was a major reason for the American Revolution.

    The Battle of Bunker Hill took place as part of the Siege of Boston during the American Revolutionary War. The British decided to occupy the hills surrounding the city of Boston. They tried to occupy Bunker Hill but were surprised by US forces. They got the Hill later but lost a lot of men. This battle resulted in a very costly British victory after the US army ran out of supplies.

    In 1781, many battles were fought between British and US forces, after a while, the British were forced to take refuge in Yorktown, before they could get reinforcements and more supplies, the US and France launched sea and land sieges. THis led to the surrender of over 7500 troops and won the US independence.
  • Treaty of Paris

    After the defeat at Yorktown, Great Britain realized they could no longer win the war. This led to the Treaty of Paris in 1783. In this, the British recognized the independence of the US and said their western border was the Mississippi river, though they would eventually expand past this.
