  • Exploring Vermont

    Samuel De Champlain was the first Europeon explorer to reach Vermont.
  • Building a Fort

    The French built the fort, Sainte Anne on Isle La Motte. This island is on Lake Champlain. Most of the first people in Vermont were fur traders or missionaries. Later it was taken over by the Green Mountain Boys.
  • Moving to Vermont

    European settlers start moving to Vermont to settle. They settled along the Connecticut River in the east.
  • French and Indian War

    Great Britain gets control of Vermont after winning the war against the Indians.
  • Driving New York Settlers Out

    At the end of the war, many new people came. Ethan Allen organizes the Green Mountain Boys to drive out the New York settlers. For years the Green Mountain Boys practically ruled Vermont. In 1775 the Green Mountain Boys. The British were able to hold the fort until 1777.
  • An Independent Republic

    In 1776, the american colonists declared the Decleration of Independence. In 1777 representatives declared a law that makes it illegal to have slaves. Then people in Vermont declared Vermont an independent republic state.
