    Lewis and Clark begin the expediton laeving with 40 other men and a dog. They are traveling from St. Louis to the Pacific. They are traveling in a 55 foot keelboat. They have a long way to go now.

    Sgt. Charles Floyd
    Sgt. Charles Floyd died on the expediton because of a burst appendix. He was the only member on the expedition who died.The military funeral was conducted by Captain Lewis himself. Lewis also named a river after Floyd: Floyd's River

    The expediton spots a variety of wildlife scattered all over. Also, Joseph Field killed the expediton's first buffalo. Buffalo provided the ingredients for one of Lewis' favorite dishes.
  • Sacagawea and Toussaint Charbonneau

    Sacagawea and Toussaint Charbonneau
    Toussaint Charbonneau is hired as an interpreter. Along with him

    comes Sacagawea, his wife that was sold to him. Sacagawea was going to become a very important person on the expedition.

    The expediton moves to Fort Mandan for the winter. Their plan was to wait until Spring arrived. They stayed at Fort Mandan for five months

    Sacagawea gives birth to a baby boy. He was named Jean Baptiste. Lewis became very fond of him and even nicknamed him "Little pomp" which meant leader.

    Lewis discovers a village of Shoshones and tries to negotiate for horses. Sacagawea then realizes that the Shoshone chief Cameahwait is her long lost brother. Lewis and Clark name the site Camp Fortunate.

    Lewis and another hunter kill a large grizzly bear. This was the very first grizzly bear they ever encountered. So it was a fascinating creature to them even though they killed it.
  • The Columbia River

    The expediton reaches the Columbia River. They are almost to the Pacific. They don't have much trouble with this river as they did with the Missouri River.
  • Camp Time

    The expediton camps at a site which is modern John Day Dam, Washington. They also bought wood and breakfast from the Indians.
  • Expediton ends

    Lewis and Clark have reached the Pacific Ocean and the expediton is done. It took them more than a year. But they found an all water route to the Pacific Ocean. They are getting ready to return to St. Louis.
