    Pasteur discovered that diseases were cause by germs. The awareness of germs made people more conscious about their hygeine and cleanliness. New ways to clean began to appear, including the vacuum.

  • Daniel Hess

    Daniel Hess patented the first vacuum cleaner, which he called a 'carpet sweeper'. It had water chambers to capture dust and dirt, but it was never recorded to have been produced.
  • "Whirlwind" Vacuum Cleaner is patented.

    These vacuums were only slightly more convinient for people to use because they were still heavy and hard to maneuver. They were sold for $25, which would equal $500 today.

    Bissell invented a 'carpet sweeper' to help his wife clean the carpets. This then became a bagless vacuum that doesn't require the purchase of extra vacuum bags.

    Booth patented his vacuum cleaner. It was horesdrawn and was parked outside of houses and vacuumed them through hoses that were put through the windows.

    A moveable electric vacuum was invented, but it weighed 92 pounds and didn't sell well because of the large size.

    Griffith had a manufacturing company in England that created a one person, portable vacuum with attatchments.

    Spangler used a box, fan, and pillowcase to create an electric vacuum cleaner which had a rotating brush. He sold the design to Hoover because he didn't have enough money to produce it himself.

    Wardell creates the 'Eureka Vacuum Cleaner Company' that sold lighter vacuums than its competitors. There were attatchments tho clean walls and floors and one to blow dry hair.

    Kirby invented a 'broom stick' vacuum cleaner that could have attachments used with the machine.

    Beach and Osius created a small motor that soon led to the first portable vacuum cleaner.

  • Plastic Vacuums

    Plastic vacuums were put on the market and some fancier ones had headlights.

    Gustaf Sahlin
    Sahlin was given the rights to Electrolux and had a factory built in Connecticut. During the war, Electrolux stopped making vacuums, but resumed after the war and made a lot of money.

    After 5,000 tries, Dyson invented a vacuum cleaner that doesn't get clogged or lose suction. His model uses centrifugal force to remove particles that may block the airflow.
