    Rep. Preston Brooks attacked Sunmer with a cane, beating him senseless. Sunmer didn't return to Senate for 2 years
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    Slave owned by an army doctor in Missouri
    In 1930s, doctor moved to Illonis, a free state, then to Wisonsin Territory, where slavery was banned.
    Doctor returned to Missouri and he died in 1846.
    Scott sued for his freedom.

    A test to see how the Supreme Court would rule on slavery
    Ruling given by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney: as a slave, Dred Scott had no right to sue
    Slaves were property.
    Ruling meant that the Constitution protected slavery!
  • Lincoln-Douglas Debates

    Lincoln-Douglas Debates
    Series of 7 debates for the Illinois seat for Congress.
    Between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas.
    Main issue debated was SLAVERY.
    Douglas will win the Senate seat by a narrow margin, but Lincoln now gains national attention.
  • John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry

    John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
    John Brown, 16 men, 2 of Brown's sons, and 5 African Americans raided Harper's Ferry, VA
    Targets the arsenal and armory in town
    To get weapons and ammo into the hands of slave to start an armed rebellion against slaveholders.
    John Brown caputred by Robert E. Lee and given a trial in Jefferson County, VA
    Verdict is guily and sentece is death by hanging on Dec. 5.
    Last words "I, John Brown am quite certain that the crimes of this guily land will never be purged away but with blood."

  • The South Secedes

    The South Secedes
    Southern states begin to secede.
    South believe's in States' rights.
    South Carolina secedes first on Dec. 20
    By February 1862, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia had also seceded.
    Formed their own government: The Confederate States of America
    Chose Jefferson Davis as their President
  • Firing on Fort Sumter

    Firing  on Fort Sumter
    Fort Sumter, located in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina.
    Fort low on supplies and asks Pres. Lincoln to send them.
    Pres. Jefferson ordered the fort attacked and taken before supplies arrived.
    Fort held out for 33 hours before the Union forces surrendered.
    Now NC, VA, AK secede.
