  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was between the pro-slavery and anti-slavery states. From this Missouri became a slave state, and Maine became a free state. Slavery was forbidden north of the 36 degree 30 feet latitude line, except for the state of Missouri. People in the North were encouraged to return slaves to their owners , and slavery was not prohibited anywhere, not even in free territories. In 1854, The Missouri Compromise was replaced by the Kansas-Nebraska Act. (www.loc.gov)
  • Mexican War

    Mexican War
    The Mexican government warned the United states that with the annexation of texas would mean war. Mexico wouldn't recognize Texas independence. When it becoame a state, Mexico cut ties with the United States. American forces invaded and conquered New Mexico, California, and parts of what is now currently northern Mexico.     Kansas-Nebraska Act
    This created two new territories called Kansas and Nebraska, also this act replaced the Missouri Compromise. Also this act let settlers choose if they would allow slavery in the boundaries. People n the north were mad, while the people in the south were happy about this act. After the act was passed pro and anti-slavery supporters rushed into Kansas to affect the outcome.     Charles Sumner was a congress men in Massachusetts. He was against savery and he made a speech saying how bad the compromises were that let slavery in Kansas. Then he started saying that the Missouri Compromise, The Kansas-Nebraska Act, and voting to allow slavery in the terriotry was a bad thing also. Sumner singled out the men, which was not a good idea. Preston Brooks a member of the house of reps. of South Carolina wasnt singled out but was mad so he beat Sumner with a cane.(history1800s.com

    800 southern led by sheriff Jones went into the town. They took over the first govern of kansas Charles L Robinson, house and used it as their headquarters. Also there were men on every street so people could not escape the attack. The printing offices were destroyed. Next, they planned to destroy the Free State Hotel. Cannons were shot at the buliding, but it was hard for it to come down, it finally did because of fire.(www.civilwar.com)

    John Brown was a nut. He thought that god has choose him to end slavery, so he took action. Him and a group of New englanders went up to Pottawatomie Creek where some pro-slavery people were staying. They took five men, dragged them out of their house and killed them in front of their families.(notes)

    Lecompton Constitution
    This was the second constitution for the state of Kansas. It was written in Responce to the anti-slavery constitution called the Topeka Constitution. Stephen Douglass sided with the republicans, and was against the constitution. The constitution was never passed and it put a rip into the democratic party, which paved the way for Abe lincoln.     There was four people running in the election, there was Abraham Lincoln, John C. Breckinridge, John Bell, Stephen A, Douglas. Abe Lincoln won this election and became the sixteenth president of the United States. Without winning one southern state, Abe Lincoln still one the election.     Abe was warned of the danger of going to Washington. He took a secret route to Washington. He rode in an open carriage with pesident Buchanan. He knew that we, the United States were on the verge of a civil war. He said we must not be enemies, but friends.     This was the beginning of the Civil War. The Confederates forces in Charleston, South Carloina wanted the Union to surrender the fort. Commander Anderson of the Union redused. So the Confederate forces opened fire at the fort. Then three days later Anderson surrendered the fort and they left.
