Important Events of Chapter 6

  • French establish Quebec

    in the year 1608, the French establish and claim Quebec. This was the first event that lead to France's attempt of conquest over Canada.
  • Foundation of Louisiana

    Louisiana was founded in 1682 by Robert de LaSalle. LaSalle founded Louisiana in hope to halt Spanish expansion into the area near the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Founding of Detroit

    Antoine Cadillac founded the city of Detroit in 1701. He did this in hopes of thwarting the English settlers from pushing into the Ohio Valley.
  • Peace Deal in Utrecht

    The peace deal in Utrecht in 1713 gave Acadia, New Foundland, and Hudson Bay to England. This pinched the French settlements by the St.Lawrence and gave Britain limited trading rights with Spanish America.
  • The War of Jenkins Ear

    The War of Jenkins Ear
    The war was confined to the Caribbean Sea and Georgia. In the War of Jenkins Ear, (eventually named King George's War in America) France allied itself with Spain. However, English troops captured the impregnable fortress of Cape Breton Island. However peace tearms of the war gave Louisbourg back to France
  • George Washington Sent to Virginia

    In 1754, George Washington was sent to the Ohio country and encountered some Frenchmen, killing the French leader. Once the French returned, they eventually forced Washing to surrender but let him march away with his men. Essentially began the French and Indian War.
  • Meeting Between 7 of 13 Colonies

    Meeting Between 7 of 13 Colonies
    In 1754, seven of the thirteen colonies met for an intercolonial congress in Albany, New York. Known as the Albany Congress. The meeting in Albany was supposed to unite the colonists but eventually failed. This was, however, the first step towards unity for the colonists.
  • Braddock's Defeat

    Braddock's Defeat
    In 1755, General Braddock led a group of inexeperienced soldiers into Virginia to capture Fort Duquense but inevitably, was brutally defeated. The Indians who were proud of the victory began to scalp all people on the frontier from Pennsylvania to North Carolina
  • William Pitt Becomes Leader

    William Pitt become Britains leader in 1757 during their hour of trouble. Pitt was able to focus Britains attentions on Quebec-Montreal and replace old cautious offficers with younger daring officers.
  • Louisbourg Falls

    In 1758, Louisbourg fell. This event began to wither the New France "vine" since supplies dwindled
  • Battle of Quebec

    Battle of Quebec
    The Battle of Quebec in 1759 ranks as one of tge most significant engagements in British and American history because it influneced the creation of Canada. When Montreal fell in 1760, it would be the last time French flags would fly on American soil.
  • Peace Treaty at Paris

    Peace Treaty at Paris
    In the Peace Treaty at Paris, France was completely kicked out of North America. Meaning British got Canada and the land all the way to the Missippi River.
  • Chief Pontiac

    Chief Pontiac
    Chief Pontiac led, with the help of a few French allied troups, a bloody campaign through the Ohio Valley but was quickely and cruelly stopped
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Parliament issued the Proclamation of 1763 which prohibited any settlement in any area beyond the Appalachians. However, the Americans were not happy about this and thought of the Proclamation as another sign of oppression. The stage was set for the Revolutionary War,
